Education

1996 (December): Laurea (four-year degree, i.e. MA) in Modern Languages, University of Genoa (Italy). Thesis title: “La sintassi dell’alternanza dativa inglese” (“The syntax of the English dative alternation”). Mark: 110 out of 110, cum Laude. The thesis was also granted “dignità di stampa” [i.e. it was considered suitable for publication]. Supervisors: Prof. Gabriele Azzaro, Prof. Ermanno Barisone.

2002 (January): PhD in Linguistics, University of Pavia (Italy). Thesis title: “The English Change Network”. Published as Broccias, C. 2003. The English Change Network. Forcing Changes into Schemas. 2017 (July): BSc (Honours) in Mathematics and Physics (Q77), The Open University (UK), “First-class Honours”.

Qualifications

2003 (April): Qualification as “Ricercatore” (= Assistant Professor (US)/Lecturer (UK)) in English Linguistics, Faculty of Modern Languages, University of Genoa. [Researcher positions in Italy were and are still awarded on the basis of a local exam/competition (i.e. an exam at the university where the position is advertised).] Date of appointment as “Ricercatore”: January 2004.

2004 (June): Qualification as “Professore Associato” (= Associate Professor (US)/Senior Lecturer (UK)) in English Language. At the time, this type of qualification was awarded on the basis of an exam/competition where a position for “Associate Professor” was advertised. (Usually, for each competition, this qualification was awarded to two of the applicants, one of which would be hired by the University where the competition took place.) I took and passed this exam at the University of Modena e Reggio Emilia. I was appointed Associate Professor of English Linguistics at the Faculty of Modern Languages (now Department of Modern Languages and Cultures) of the University of Genoa on 30th December 2005. Tenure [“conferma”] since 2009.

2014 (August): Qualification as “Professore di Prima Fascia” (= Full Professor (US/UK), Habilitation (Germany)), see here. (I was awarded this qualification in 2014 although I applied for it in 2012. The whole process went very slowly, as things usually do in Italy!). Appointed as Full Professor of English Linguistics  on 1st November 2017.
